“THEY’RE HERE”…TWO MONTHS EARLY!!
Article by Adam Mast
20th Century Fox announced today that it’ll be altering a couple of high profile movie release dates this summer.
First up, the R rated Melissa McCarthy comedy SPY, which was originally slated for May 22nd, has since been bumped back by two weeks. It will now open on June 5th.
In an even bigger move, Fox’s POLTERGEIST reboot, which was initially slated for July 24th, is now opening on May 22nd. Over two months earlier than expected!
One would suspect that Fox feels confident that they have a hit on their hands in the form of this new take on the 80’s classic from MONSTER HOUSE director Gil Kenan. Why else would the studio opt to release this picture right on the heels of AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON and FURY ROAD?
With BRIDESMAIDS and THE HEAT, director Paul Feig and star Melissa McCarthy are 2 for 2. Will SPY make it 3 for 3? I’d say there’s a good chance of that.
POLTERGEIST might be a tougher sell only because purists like me are so unbelievably skeptical about it. Having said that though, I am a Kenan fan and there’s no denying that the film has a great cast (Sam Rockwell, Rosemarie Dewitt, and Jared Harris star.) Furthermore, there’s a whole new generation that will be going into this movie blind. It’ll be completely new to them. These new fans could potentially make this movie a hit.
At the very least, even if this modern take on POLTERGEIST doesn’t live up to the original, I can always go back to the Tobe Hooper/Steven Spielberg classic to get my fix.
