THIS COULD BE SUICIDE…AND NOT THE “SQUAD” KIND!
Article by Adam Mast
Wow! Warner Brothers just dropped the mic in a big way! While it is true that BATMAN V SUPERMAN has made a ton of cash worldwide, there is no doubt that there is still a rather large portion of the DC fan base that is less than impressed with DAWN OF JUSTICE.
And in fact, during its opening weekend, BVS had a record breaking box-office plummet from Saturday to Sunday.
Beyond that, it’s no secret that WB had become increasingly nervous about this film and was quite worried about the kind of reception it would receive upon release.
Who’s to blame for many of the issues a lot of fans have with the movie? Most of the finger pointing has been directed squarely at director Zack Snyder.
Ever the shrewd business man however, Snyder was smart enough to broker a deal that would allow him to direct back-to-back JUSTICE LEAGUE movies well before DAWN OF JUSTICE even hit theaters. Here’s the thing, though. In that funny place called Hollywood, there’s no such thing as an ironclad deal.
And so today, Warner Brothers has made it official! Less than a month before cameras were set to roll on the first JUSTICE LEAGUE movie, the famed studio and DC have announced that Snyder is no longer directing these all-star superhero epics. Who is? That’s where things get weird.
I know I’m not alone in my opinion that the most obvious replacement would be FURY ROAD helmer, George Miller. After all, this iconic storyteller came really close to mounting his own JUSTICE LEAGUE movie less than a decade ago. What a great fit this would be!
Alas, WB and DC clearly don’t see eye to eye with yours truly. No, they have a far less conventional game plan. Zack Snyder’s replacement on JUSTICE LEAGUE will be…
JOEL SCHUMACHER!!!!
Yes, the same Joel Schumacher who nearly destroyed the franchise with the abomination that was BATMAN AND ROBIN!
Yes, the same Joel Schumacher who added nipples to the batsuit!
WTF?!
Martha is turning over in her grave, right about now!
Before fans fly off the handle, it should be noted that Schumacher has made plenty of good movies throughout his career. THE LOST BOYS, FLATLINERS, COUSINS, FALLING DOWN, and D.C. CAB among them.
Still, Warner Brothers is taking a monumentally huge risk here! This is quite the unprecedented move. Not since Brett Ratner replaced Bryan Singer on X-MEN 3 has there been a director switch on a superhero property of this magnitude. When reached for comment, a tenacious Schumacher had this to say:
“Listen, I f***ed up with BATMAN AND ROBIN! I know that. But now, I have a chance to make it up to the fans. Paramount is giving Steven Spielberg, Harrison Ford, and David Koepp another shot at Indy, so it seems only fair that Warner Brothers give me another shot. I wish Snyder the best of luck with all future endeavors, but now, it’s time to get the DC universe back on track!”
I don’t know about the rest of you but this news makes me incredibly nervous. I’m all about risk taking and Schumacher is certainly capable of making solid movies, but this seems like suicide…and not the “Squad” kind.
