GOONIES NEVER SAY DIE!

I was fortunate enough to attend Salt Lake Comic Con over the weekend, and with fan favorites like Sean Astin leading the charge, I have to say, it was a surprisingly fun Con. I only say “surprisingly,” because I’m one of those spoiled nerds who has the luxury of getting to go to Comic-Con International in San Diego every year.
What Salt Lake Comic Con lacks in upcoming movie footage, it more than makes up for in memorable talent. There were quite a few strong panels at this particular Con this year, but for me personally, it was clear that Sean Astin won the weekend.
With iconic cinematic efforts like THE GOONIES and THE LORD OF THE RINGS tucked firmly under his belt, Astin has made quite a name for himself as an actor through the years. While those aforementioned titles are, perhaps, his most well known, I’ve always had a soft spot for Astin’s inspirational work in RUDY. For those who haven’t seen this rousing underdog sports film, I highly recommend it. Even if you could care less about football, chances are, you’ll be moved by it.
As strong an actor as Astin is, I was quite pleased to discover that Astin the human being is every bit as engaging and genuine as the characters he plays in the movies. Seriously! This guy is the real deal.
Astin made the most of his memorable time on stage at Salt Lake Comic Con. He spoke of his various causes and his genuine love for people in general, but to the great delight of his adoring fans, he also spent plenty of time talking about his movie career. He shared passionate stories of his unforgettable work on THE LORD OF THE RINGS, recited dialogue from RUDY, and spoke of fond memories from THE GOONIES shoot. While we’re on the topic of THE GOONIES, a panel highlight came in the form a GOONIES 2 question asked by an eager fan.
It seems that word of a GOONIES sequel has been talked about for years, and back in 2014, even director Richard Donner fueled the fire by suggesting that the sequel would happen. Of course, news regarding this much beloved property has subsided and when a 2014 San Diego Comic-Con GOONIES reunion panel was cancelled last minute, it looked as if the project was finally dead.
Well, according to Astin, perhaps this project isn’t dead. See what Mikey himself had to say about a potential GOONIES 2 in the video clip above. Take this news with a grain of salt though. This isn’t so much a confirmation that this movie will come to fruition any time soon but Astin does believe it will eventually happen.
What does everyone else think about the possibility of THE GOONIES 2? Is it time this film is permanently squashed or do you want to see it happen?
