BURYING THE EX

WELCOME BACK JOE DANTE!
Article by Adam Mast

The title of this article is a little bit misleading, because I’m sure if you spoke to Joe Dante about it, he’d say that he never left. The truth is, the famed 80’s director has done some t.v work and he keeps really busy with his TRAILERS FROM HELL web site. If you’re not familiar with TFH, check it out here.

Unfortunately, Dante doesn’t direct films as much as he used to, and that’s really disappointing to his fans. Of course, the lack of directing gigs coming his way is no fault of his own. The business has greatly changed since his glory days in the 80’s. THE HOWLING, GREMLINS, EXPLORERS, INNERSPACE, THE ‘BURBS, etc. What a run he had. I’m sure if Dante had his way, he’d still be directing a movie every year. He loves what he does! It’s simply built into his DNA.

While visiting with Dante for an all too brief moment on the BURYING THE EX set late last year, I told him how much I enjoyed his last film, 2009’s  THE HOLE, to which he playfully replied; “So you’re the one who saw that movie.” Yes, THE HOLE tanked. A shame because it’s very entertaining. A horror show for kids.

A couple of months after our set visit, we were fortunate enough to have a more detailed conversation with Mr. Dante at The Stanley Film Festival. He was incredibly gracious and it was difficult for us to not geek out a little bit while chatting with him. We didn’t have a chance to ask Dante much about BURYING THE EX at the time, but we did cover a great deal of his extraordinary career in a very brisk 20 minutes. Check that video interview out right here;

In Joe Dante’s upcoming directorial effort BURYING THE EX, a charming Anton Yelchin is Max–a likable twenty-something who desperately wants to move beyond his current relationship. The problem is, he knows that if he puts an end to the relationship, it’ll break the girl’s heart so he’s reluctant to do the deed. When fate intervenes, Max is able to move on with his life, but a brand new relationship is ultimately threatened when his ex makes a most unexpected return. And upon return, said ex is not entirely herself. The film also stars the lovely Ashley Greene and  a much buzzed about Alexandra Daddario. In addition to walking that fine line between horror and comedy, BURYING THE EX promises to include several winks at the plethora of films that have inspired Joe Dante and screenwriter Alan Trezza through the years. A clip from BURYING THE EX is making the rounds and it’s pretty damn entertaining. It has a bit of a DEATH BECOMES HER ring to it. See the clip here;

Here’s hoping that Dante’s upcoming zom-com, BURYING THE EX, makes a connection with audiences. If buzz from its big premiere at the Venice Film Festival is any indication, it’s going to do just that.  Check out The Hollywood Reporter’s review here.

When are the rest of us going to get a look at BURYING THE EX? That’s anybody’s guess. There isn’t a U.S. release date locked in yet but I suspect this flick is going to get some good play at festivals around the world and that means it’s only a matter of time before we all get to see it. And if it’s a hit, perhaps it will open doors for Joe Dante again. As a fan, I hate the idea that this legend only gets to make a movie once every five years.
