EPISODE IX HAS A NEW DIRECTOR…PERHAPS YOU’VE HEARD OF HIM

J.J. Abrams

TREVORROW IS OUT AND THIS GUY IS IN!

Article by Adam Mast

A huge STAR WARS announcement was made today. News that will probably come as a surprise to no one. Following the not-so-shocking Lucasfilm announcement that Colin Trevorrow would no longer be directing EPISODE IX comes word that the studio has found a somewhat reputable replacement.

It’s…

J.J. ABRAMS!!

Abrams, of course, directed (and co-wrote) THE FORCE AWAKENS and while that movie was a massive success, it was met with some negativity from a contingent of fans that thought it was more of a rehash than a true follow-up. Personally, I thought the movie was hugely entertaining despite the obvious beats inspired by past installments.

No matter your opinion on the subject, THE FORCE AWAKENS still has plenty of fans. In addition to the energetic, joyful direction, Abrams simply cast the shit out of it!

Not surprisingly, Abrams was always on the short list for EPISODE IX, as was THE LAST JEDI writer/director Rian Johnson (who, according to Deadline and a few other online sources, wasn’t interested in taking the project on), but ultimately, the man who brought the saga back is the one who’s going to finish the new trilogy out.

Here’s a statement from Lucasfilm and Walt Disney Pictures;

J.J. Abrams, who launched a new era of Star Wars with The Force Awakens in 2015, is returning to complete the sequel trilogy as writer and director of STAR WARS: EPISODE IX. Abrams will co-write the film with Chris Terrio. STAR WARS: EPISODE IX will be produced by Kathleen Kennedy, Michelle Rejwan, Abrams, Bad Robot, and Lucasfilm.

“With THE FORCE AWAKENS, J.J. delivered everything we could have possibly hoped for, and I am so excited that he is coming back to close out this trilogy,” said Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy.
