LIKE FATHER LIKE SON
Article by Adam Mast
This past April, Jeff Sanders and I saw some really great genre films at The Stanley Film Festival in Colorado. We were also fortunate enough to converse with many of the truly innovative minds behind some of those films. Larry Fessenden immediately springs to mind. The creative auteur behind 1995’s unique vampire movie, HABIT is quite the film-maker but it’s really worth noting that a big portion of his career has been dedicated to the nurturing of upcoming genre talent.
When word surfaced that Fessenden would be assisting his own 13 year old son on a project, we were immediately intrigued. I mean, how damn cool is that?!!
Well, young Jack Fessenden has finally finished his 30 minute short and he’s ready to unleash it upon the world. RIDING SHOTGUN tells the tale of a pair of teenage buddies who have a stronger bond than their constant bickering would have you believe. Let’s just say that if you lived in the world that young Atticus and Max live in, the unbearable stress of your situation would probably cause you to bicker too.
RIDING SHOTGUN gets a lot of mileage out of great locales, a creepy tone, and a truly awesome cameo and quite frankly, it’s just a ton of fun to see Jack follow in his pop’s footsteps. Further still, it’s especially cool to see a dad who is not only willing to encourage his son’s creativity…he’s actually willing to help him realize his vision too. Now that’s cool parenting.
