ROBOCOP AND NUMBER 5 HAD A KID!
Article by Adam Mast
Film-maker Neill Blomkamp is a fantastic world builder, there’s no doubt about that. DISTRICT 9 was one of the best movies of 2009, a fantastic sci-fi actioneer with deep rooted social commentary.
His second feature, ELYSIUM? Not so much. Don’t get me wrong. From a technical stand point, the movie looked gorgeous but with little subtlety to speak of and an obnoxious antagonist played by Jodie Foster, ELYSIUM left a lot to be desired.
This brings us to CHAPPIE. I want this movie to be good and I certainly have no problem when a film-maker pays homage to the films that inspire him, but this flick looks a little TOO SHORT CIRCUIT meets ROBOCOP. I have to say though, again, from a technical stand point, it looks pretty bad ass.
In the end, I like Blomkamp. I’m in his corner. I want this movie to be great.
