THIS AIN’T NO JOKE!
Article by Adam Mast
Yesterday, director David Ayer and co-star Jared Leto took to Twitter to give us our first real glimpse at The Joker as he’ll appear in the super-villain-on-a-mission epic, SUICIDE SQUAD. I’m kind of surprised this photo wasn’t unveiled during CinemaCon in Vegas earlier this week.
At a glance, this Joker looks considerably different than other versions of the iconic villain. I’m digging the teeth and Leto’s crazy eyes but I could do without the tats, particularly the “Damaged” tat on his forehead.
I understand that some of this might be coming directly from the art work, but if that’s the case, I feel like it’s something the film-makers should have taken liberties with. Obviously, this movie will be showcasing a younger, more physically imposing incarnation of The Joker and I love that, but Jared Leto is a terrific actor and he’s fully capable of conveying the crazy, over the top nature of this loose cannon without the added assistance of rhetorical body art.
Having said that, this is just a photo. I’ll reserve final judgment until I see this maniac in action. In the meantime, I’m incredibly curious to see what Leto brings to the table and I’m equally curious to see how director David Ayer handles this material as a whole.
SUICIDE SQUAD, starring Jared Leto, Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Jai Courtney, Cara Delevingne, Jay Hernandez, Viola Davis, Scott Eastwood, Adam Beach, and Joel Kinnaman, opens in theaters throughout the U.S. on August 5, 2016.
