IF IT WORKED FOR “FARGO”, IT CAN WORK FOR “SHUTTER ISLAND”

Deadline.com is reporting that Paramount and HBO are planning to bring SHUTTER ISLAND to the small screen by way of a t.v. series tentatively titled ASHECLIFFE. Not only that, but apparently, Martin Scorsese plans on directing the Dennis Lehane scripted pilot! This is intriguing news, particularly for those of us who loved 2010’s SHUTTER ISLAND.
Fans of the film (and the Lehane novel that inspired it) will recall that Ashecliffe was the name of the mental hospital at the heart of the story.
No word on a cast at this point, but it’s looking like Leonardo DiCaprio (who starred in the movie) will serve as an executive producer. Deadline also goes on to report that the series will focus on events that occurred before the events that transpired in the film. So yes, it looks like this will be an Ashecliffe origin story.
I was a huge fan of the movie. It was exciting to see a pro like Scorsese flexing his creative muscles in the thriller genre. There were complaints that the “surprise” at the center of the movie wasn’t all that surprising, but it should be noted that SHUTTER ISLAND wasn’t hinged upon a grandiose reveal. From the beginning, it’s fairly clear that things aren’t as they seem. The beauty of SHUTTER ISLAND comes in the form of its key character’s journey.
DiCaprio is fantastic in this film and his final line of dialogue in particular, is haunting, heartbreaking, and poignant.
I’m intrigued at the very idea of a series. If it can work for FARGO it can work for SHUTTER ISLAND. More news regarding ASHECLIFFE as it becomes available.
