THE HORROR-FEST EDITION OF THE GUERILLA FILMMAKING
CHALLENGE RETURNS TO SOUTHERN UTAH!
Article by Adam Mast
That’s right, southern Utah-based filmies! Halloween is right around the corner and that means it’s time for another Guerilla Filmmaking Challenge! Presented by The Film and Media Alliance of Southern Utah, the upcoming Challenge will be held in conjunction with the 16th annual Horror-Fest spooktacular; An epic, Halloween-themed event overflowing with cinematic treasures inspired by the scariest of holidays.
On Tuesday, September 19th at 6 PM, local filmmakers of all ages and all skill sets are encouraged to meet at The Electric Theater in St. George, UT. At this meeting, a theme will be revealed along with a list of guidelines. Following this meeting, filmmakers will have just a few short weeks to put together a short film using any resources available to them.
A $25 submission fee per film is required. Submission fees will go towards cash prizes for the strongest Guerilla entries of the bunch. That said, this has never really been about the competition aspect of the proceedings, so don’t let that detour you from taking part in the Challenge.
All films made for this Challenge will be shown in a theatrical setting on Saturday, October 28th. While at Horror-Fest, you’ll feel the energy of a packed theater as enthusiastic attendees experience your creative cinematic efforts, first hand. At the end of the day, this is one of the more gratifying aspects of the filmmaking process.
On a final note, just because this is Horror-Fest, event organizers want to make it clear that your short films don’t necessarily have to be horror in nature. Of course, this is a Halloween-themed event and horror films are certainly welcome, but in the end, this particular Guerilla Filmmaking Challenge is all-genre inclusive; Horror, comedy, drama, action, romance, musical, documentary, etc. As long as you stick to the theme and follow the guidelines, you can make whatever kind of film you’re most comfortable with. If you’re unable to attend the Theme Reveal Meeting on September 19th and still want to take part in the Challenge, fear not. Visit the “Southern Utah’s Guerilla Filmmaking Challenge” Facebook page to see how you can still join in on this magical storytelling adventure.
