FMASU FUNDRAISER: KEEPING THE SPIRIT OF LOCAL FILMMAKING ALIVE!

FMASU FUNDRAISER IN ST. GEORGE, UT:

KEEPING THE SPIRIT

OF LOCAL FILMMAKING ALIVE!

Article by Adam Mast

St. George, UT is home to The Film and Media Alliance of Southern Utah (FMASU), a non-profit dedicated to the encouraging and nurturing of aspiring filmmaking talent in the area. Through various events throughout the year, including the Southern Utah Filmmaker Spotlight, the Guerilla Filmmaking Challenge, Horror-Fest, and A Merry Movie Christmas, FMASU prides itself on creating an outlet for Utah-based filmmakers to create stories and to have a venue where they can share their work because, let’s face it…While YouTube and Vimeo are a great way to reach a wide audience, nothing beats the theatrical experience.

On Saturday, May 5th, FMASU will host a fundraiser at The Electric Theater in lovely St. George, UT. While the purpose of FMASU and its mission statement are simple and clear, it should be noted that non-profits of this nature can only evolve through the aid of the community. And that’s what this fundraiser is all about. Beyond that, though, this get together has also been designed as a means to bring awareness to the local filmmaking community. Therefore, local businesses, patrons of the arts, members of the community, and Southern Utah-based filmmakers of all ages and all skill sets alike are encouraged to come out to what is sure to be an incredibly lively evening filled to the brim with homegrown cinematic entertainment.

This special event will feature a Guerilla Filmmaking tribute reel and  7 short films that were put together by community-based storytellers throughout the last 13 years. These creative, thrifty, lovingly crafted efforts vary in terms of tone, genre, and professionalism and each will be presented by the storytellers behind them. They will include the likes of Brandon Tippetts, Lonie Black, Tysen Bang, Brooke Bang, Caleb Hatton, Angus MacFarlane, Shaun Labrecque, Brian Grob, Jeff Sanders, Laci Fay, Dayne Fay, Sandi Catten, Peter Goodge, and Dan Fowlks.

In addition to this vibrant, moving, inspiring, funny, and entertaining collection of passionately made short films, the evening will also include a conversation with Blackhawk Walters, a St. George-based filmmaker who against all odds shot a feature called “Half-Breed” in record-breaking time through the aid of a very dedicated cast and crew. The gifted Lori Lyle will also be on hand to talk about her award-winning short, “Glass Cages,” and the challenges and rewards that come with filmmaking.

There will be a few surprises peppered throughout the evening and the event will close out with info regarding the upcoming “2018 Summer Movie Edition of the Guerilla Filmmaking Challenge.”

While this event is a fundraiser at heart, it’s also the perfect opportunity for members of the community to come together through the magical art form that is film.
