FREE STATE OF MCCONAUGHEY
Article By Briana Pugh
Alright, alright, alright! It’s time for another Matthew McConaughey film! Directed by Gary Ross (Seabiscuit, Pleasantville, and The Hunger Games) this film chronicles the story of Newton Knight (Matthew McConaughey) who was a confederate soldier and eventual deserter and outlaw. Based on the historical book “The Free State of Jones; Mississippi’s Longest Civil War” by Victoria E. Bynum, the film is a historical action flick that promises to be patriotic and enjoyable.
With Matthew McConaughey, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Keri Russell, Jacob Lofland, and Sean Bridgers. Screenplay written by Leonard Hartman and Gary Ross, Free State of Jones looks to be an interesting representation of a very fascinating and rebellious part of American history. Bynum states that the reason for writing the book was because of her desire to “hunt for ordinary people who commit extraordinary acts.” Hopefully, the movie will do justice to this man and this historical account, as it deserves.
FREE STATE OF JONES will be released in theaters by STX Entertainment on May 13, 2016.
