SUNDANCE 2016: WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FORWARD TO!

Sundance

ADAM AND JOHN ARE ABOUT TO DO A LITTLE DANCE!

Article by Adam Mast and John Pugh

ADAM’S MOST ANTICIPATED PICKS OF SUNDANCE 2016!

The great John Pugh and I are about to embark on another magical Sundance adventure. I’ve been attending since 1994 (my very first Sundance screening was a moody thriller called A PURE FORMALITY) and at this point, I don’t know how to stop. Sundance is like cinematic crack! Yeah, there’s a lot of hoops you have to jump through if you really want to see a specific film, but having an opportunity to take in a screening of a potential classic from a new voice that could potentially be around for years to come, makes the chaotic, grinding nature of the fest more than worth it.

Sundance offers up films from all around the world and while I love the Premieres and Midnight Selections it’s the unexpected gems from the mysterious newcomers that are really worth noting. There’s something to be said for being a part of a cinematic experience that serves as the initial spark for a wave of buzz that will eventually spread like wildfire.

Sundance 2016 begins  on Thursday, January 21st, and while there are countless films I’m looking forward to, I thought I’d list a handful of them for your reading pleasure. Have a look.

JOHN’S MOST ANTICIPATED
PICKS OF SUNDANCE 2016!

The Sundance Film Festival remains Utah’s melting pot for film culture. Fortunately for Adam and I, we remain the local villagers who anticipate the festival’s return each year, to view and share with you the latest on the filmmaking masters and their beautiful, more often than not, moving art. THE WITCH, ’71 and THE END OF THE TOUR were some of my favorite experiences of last year. So what’s in store for us this year? We hope our coverage will accurately convey our affection, of what it feels like, to simply be a part of an audience witnessing the variety of voices and films that play throughout the fest. We do not consider these festivals work, instead they are in line with our passion and our desires of experiencing great cinema amid the great individuals who brought them to life. We hope our followers will aspire to achieve their dreams and we also hope to someday reach our greater calling among the filmmaking society.

Some things to consider every year; Firstly, the Q&A’s and the personal behind-the-scene stories shared by those involved in the films make each screening worth its weight in gold. The opportunity to meet and greet with the celebrities is always rewarding and memorable (take a photo, it lasts longer). Lastly, and certainly not the least, would be the thrill of standing shoulder to shoulder with thousands of film loving patrons throughout the festival. These wonderful souls,  many of whom have travelled from afar, are here to share their thoughts and sound opinions. We have made many friends along the way and many times, through our thoughtful, detailed conversations, we would discover that some of these individuals were actually  filmmakers themselves. In many cases, some even had movies playing at the festival. We have also been directed towards specific films that the patrons had seen and loved. Those films sometimes end up becoming our favorites. So, it’s important to meet your line neighbor and discuss the films playing at the festival because you never know who you might be talking to.

Here’s to hoping Sundance 2016 delivers the goods! Here are my top 10 most anticipated films and events of this year’s festival. Have a look.
