DIRECTOR KYLE PATRICK ALVAREZ GIVES YOU A PROVOCATIVE LOOK AT HUMAN NATURE
Article by Adam Mast
The trailer for THE STANFORD PRISON EXPERIMENT just dropped and it does a good job representing the tone of the film. This solid dramatization of a real life 70’s social experiment is a gripping (and unsettling) expose on the abuse of power and the fragility of the human brain.
I had an opportunity to see this effective movie at Sundance back in January, and it emerged as one of my favorites at the fest. I’ve also been fortunate enough to chat with director Kyle Patrick Alvarez on a few occasions dating back to 2009 when he was on hand at CineVegas to share the underrated EASIER WITH PRACTICE with attendees. I found him to be extremely gracious and more than eager to talk about his love of filmmaking, and it should be noted that as great as his debut was, he’s come a long way since then.
Alvarez went on to adapt David Sedaris’ C.O.G. for the big screen in 2013, but for my money, THE STANFORD PRISON EXPERIMENT is his most assured work to date. It’s a movie that’s sure to get people talking, and that’s by design. See for yourself when it opens on July 17th.
